CLOWN 4 - Method of Creation

(Prerequisite: Clown 1, 2, 3 and evaluation by the professor)

“Clowns are more than the sum of their gags. For me the gag is merely a secondary tool, punctuation at the end of a sequence, while it is the sequence itself which contains the true laughter and determines the power of the gag.”  James Keylon

Clown 4 is a place to meet and exchange with Clown Artists. This workshop is conceived for those who want to go further in creation, character and play with partners. To be productive at this level, the exercises of rhythms will be more complicated and you will need to work on more than one rhythm at a time.

We will go deeper into the technique of Physical Play 'emotion/movement/text', the structure of numbers and we will work on developing the play Major/Minor, thus the questions of relationships inside partnerships. We will explain the palette of emotions and rhythms for each character in order to better understand the interior role inside a duo. We will tame the structured improvisations, rehearsals and the creation with the help of mini-numbers for two. We discover the importance of the emotional thru-line and the utility of the story thru-line. It is not what you do, but how you do it that is essential to the Clown.

Also in Clown 4, the students will be asked to work with several partners and have a time of clown 'coaching' of their mini-number created with a partner. It is not necessary to be in a Clown duo to inscribe in this workshop, the partners can be formed in the class (under the council of the professor).

At the end of the workshop, the students will be equipped with the tools to continue their research concretely and be able to evolve further in their work. Many artists retake Clown-4, giving themselves a deeper understanding of their character, partnership and technique of play, for different projects. After this workshop, you will be ready for the Laboratory of clown.

Note: James Keylon (white clown “Alfredo”) will be present for the last 2 days of Clown 4 which will give you access to Laboratory of Clown.
